Thirteen people were shot — including one fatally — in gun violence across Philadelphia on Thursday, police said.

Around 2:10 p.m. in South Philadelphia, an unidentified young man was found with a gunshot wound to the head outside on the 400 block of Manton Street. He was pronounced dead at the scene by medics. Police reported no arrests.

The 400 block of Manton Street is not a bad neighborhood. Well-kept row houses, some new construction, houses in the $400-$500,000 range, and a South Philadelphia neighborhood that appears to be gentrifying.

So far this year, the number of shooting victims is up 1% compared to the same period last year — with 561 shooting victims as of April 10 compared to 555 on the same date last year as the city’s surge in gun violence continues.

As of late Wednesday night, the number of homicides in Philadelphia was down 7% from the same time last year, which ended with an all-time record of 562 killings.

So, the number of shootings has risen, while the number of homicides has dropped. That means that the number of attempted murders has increased, and that the number of homicides is down simply means that more of the shooters are lousy shots. Through the first 13 days of April, there have been 84 shooting victims, 71 of whom were black, 11 were listed as white Latinos, and 2 non-Hispanic whites.

The article continues, with details on the reported shootings, but really, shootings are so common in the City of Brotherly Love that the details get repetitious, and almost boring.

Mr Moran’s article was updated at 8:39 PM, and the night is still young. One wonders how many more bullets will fly before the cock crows in the morning.

Update: Good Friday, April 15, 2022 | 7:40 AM EDT

Mr Moran’s article was updated sometime early this morning, with the current headline, “Shootings across Philly leave 3 dead and 14 injured,” at the same link.

At least 17 people were shot — including three fatally — in gun violence across Philadelphia on Thursday, police said.

Just after 10 p.m. in Southwest Philadelphia, two 32-year-old men were shot multiple times on the 2100 block of South 67th Street. Police rushed both victims to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where they were both pronounced dead. Police found 13 spent shell casings a few feet from where the victims were found lying in the street. The men lived at separate locations nearby. No arrests were reported.

Fox29 puts the total as five killed, but some of those might have been after midnight, so not show up in the numbers which will be issued as of 11:59 PM on Thursday.

Perhaps Philly’s gang bangers heard that they had fallen behind last year’s homicide counts, and are trying to play catch-up?
