According to the Philadelphia Police Department, there have been 317 homicides in the City of Brotherly Love as of 11:59 PM EDT on Sunday, July 31st. With a recorded 257 murders as of the end of June, that means that 60 dead bodies littered Philly’s mean streets just in July, topping the 48 killed in June and 54 murdered in May, making July the city’s deadliest month so far.
But there’s more. We had previously noted that, in 2021, there had been a decrease in the homicide rate in Philly, beginning July 9th. July 2021 saw 48 murders in the city.
As of June 30th, there had been 257 homicides in the city, 5.17% fewer than the 271 on the same day in 2021. At the end of July, those 317 homicides are only 0.63% fewer than the 319 last year. At least so far, last year’s ‘lull’ has not shown up. Rather, it seems as though the gang-bangers and wannabes are trying to make up for lost time.
As of the end of July in 2021, there had been 1,356 recorded shootings in Philly; compared to 1388 this year.
Philadelphia is not a monolith. Heavily segregated, much of the violence has been restricted to five dozen blocks. As Robert Stacy McCain has noted, not all neighborhoods are created equal, and if you’re white and live in Rittenhouse Square or Society Hill, you don’t have nearly as much about which to worry.
But, hey, the real problem is Monkeypox!
You need to explain the white/Hispanic crap to me. Where I come from (South Philly) you can’t be both. One is white, black or Hispanic. While Hispanics are members of the Caucasian race they are not White people. Just like Jews are white but not Caucasian.
The Census determined that, in 2020, Hispanics of any race, constituted 14.9% of the city’s population, non-Hispanic blacks 38.3%, and non-Hispanic whites 34.3%. The city’s shootings database lists all victims by race — black, white and Asian — and then has an additional column to indicate whether the victim was “Latino” or not.
The city’s database is (deliberately?) difficult to read, and I download it, then copy the data and put it in a Microsoft Excel file, which makes it easier to use, by ‘hiding’ the columns which have meaningless data.. The city published the data, I assume because they are required to do so by law, but if they were trying to make it difficult for users, I’m not certain how much better a job they could have done of it.
Hispanics of European descent are Caucasian, but there has been so much white Hispanic migration to the Caribbean islands, where they intermixed with black slaves and the descendants of freed black slaves in those islands, that there are a lot of ethnically Hispanic black people. Interestingly7 enough, one of the victims is listed as being Asian, but also Latino. There are actually a fair number of such people in Peru.
I suppose that “white Hispanics” are what the left today call “brown” people, but that is not how the database indicates things.
Maybe the reason for the “uptick” in homicides, is that after much practice firing their “pee shooters”, the thugs are beginning to hit their mark.
While there has been a 0.63% decrease in homicides, there has also been a 2.36% increase in shootings. I call that a 2.36% increase in attempted murders.
The Philly Police have changed their tactics; they almost always do a ‘grab and go’ with shooting victims, putting them into police cars and taking them to the hospitals themselves rather than waiting for an ambulance, so that while the ride may be rougher, they get the victims to the hospital faster and slightly more victims are surviving. It’s actually a policy which is working.
