Shouldn’t a journalist be aware of basic facts?

Did you know that the United States Army, in fact all branches of our Armed Services, has standards for grooming and physical fitness? I knew, but apparently Will Bunch, the far-left columnist for The Philadelphia Inquirer, does not.

The distinguished Mr Bunch wrote:

Hegseth also declared an end to “fat” generals and overweight troops (apparently the Texas National Guard didn’t get the memo), and, OK, maybe that’s required for certain types of combat soldiers. But the broader message from the Pentagon is clear: that the new regime wants a sea of troops who look alike. Beardless, slimmed down, and, evidently — given the ouster of so many women and Black top commanders — as white and male as possible in 2025 America.

Mr Bunch just doesn’t get it. “(M)aybe that’s required for certain types of combat soldiers”? A clue: every soldier is trained to be a rifleman, and every soldier, male and female alike, is required to perform as a rifleman in combat if the situation arises. My older daughter, a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army Reserve, is still required to pass her Physical Fitness Test and her weapons qualifications, even though her MOS — Military Occupational Specialty — is 12T, Technical Engineer, basically a surveyor. She is required to make weight, as is every soldier, though those soldiers who are more heavily muscled can “make tape,” rather than weight, to prove that they are in good physical shape.

The military also have personal grooming standards. It was only in May of 2021 that the Army authorized females to wear their hair in neat ponytails rather than the older tight buns.

The Army has also long required that soldiers on duty be clean-shaven, though this was sometimes relaxed during combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the necessity of blending in amongst a bearded male population. The Navy allowed well-trimmed beards while Admiral Elmo Zumwalt was Chief of Naval Operations, but that didn’t last much beyond his retirement.

Does the Army want “a sea of troops who look alike”? Yes, of course, because that is part of military good order and discipline. The military have always striven for that, though the poorly informed columnist doesn’t seem to understand that. The US is hardly the only country which does that.

Naturally, he blames President Trump, as he does with all things; the President could walk on water and Mr Bunch would complain that he stomped on the poor little fishies! But it’s also true that Mr Trump selected J D Vance to be his running mate, and shock! Mr Vance wears a beard. Mr Bunch declares that the President wants an America that is lily-white, but Usha Vance, the Vice President’s wife is, yet another shocker, ethnically Indian, what some people would call “brown,” though she’s no darker complected than I get in the summer.

Sadly, when a (purported) journalist is afflicted with #TrumpDerangementSyndrome as badly as Mr Bunch is, checking the facts is not really part of the process.

Well, how ’bout that? It seems that President Trump’s tariff ideas are starting to work.

Tariffs are generally disfavored by economists, and, of course, by every Democrat, since the use of tariffs to stimulate American industrial employment is President Trump’s policy. But, what if they actually work as Mr Trump says he wants them to work? From The New York Times:

General Motors said on Tuesday that it was ending production of its electric van in Ontario, a move that will mean the loss of about 1,200 jobs. It was the second major blow to Canada’s automobile industry in less than a week.

G.M. cited low demand for its BrightDrop delivery van, as well as the end of tax credits for electric vehicles in the United States.

But Unifor, the Canadian union that represents auto workers, blamed the company’s move on President Trump’s trade battle with Canada, which has made exporting cars to the United States more expensive.

While I don’t celebrate Canadians losing their jobs, if that’s what happens to create more jobs for Americans, I say, America First!

Last week, the automaker Stellantis announced that it would move production of a new Jeep model from an idle factory in the Toronto suburb of Brampton to a plant in Illinois. The company shut down the factory in 2023 and laid off its roughly 3,000 workers so that it could retool the facilities, but now the fate of those employees is unclear.

General Motors was the recipient of roughly CDN$1 billion, or roughly $714 million in real American money, to retool the factory, and now the government is up in arms, and threatening legal action. But GM ceased production of the total electric vans because few companies were buying the silly things. Without government mandates requiring X percentage of vehicles sold to be total electric, people are taking decisions based upon what is more practical for them.

Democrisy! Nancy Pelosi, who has been in government for 38½ years, rips up a crown saying Donald Trump is no king

The very lovely Nancy Pelosi comes from what is as close to royalty as we have in the United States. Her father was Thomas D’Alesandro Jr, who spent a lifetime in political jobs. From 1926 to 1933, he was a member of the Maryland state House of Delegates, followed by two years as General Deputy Collector of Internal Revenue. Following that, he was elected to the Baltimore City Council, and then, in 1938, to the United States House of Representatives, where he served for eight years.

Following his service in Congress he was the Mayor of Baltimore for 12 years from May 1947 to May 1959. D’Alesandro served on the Federal Renegotiation Board from 1961 to 1969 after being appointed by President John F. Kennedy. On September 21, 1966, President Lyndon Baines Johnson’s assistant Mildred Stegall requested a routine FBI name check on D’Alesandro. FBI records released on January 6, 2021 showed D’Alesandro had been the subject of a Special Inquiry investigation in March and April 1961, revealing numerous allegations of association with criminals in Baltimore.

His son, Mrs Pelosi’s brother Thomas D’Alesandro III, continued the D’Alesandro political dynasty in Maryland, elected President of the Baltimore City Council in 1963, and, in 1967, he ran for and won the office of Mayor.

Mrs Pelosi, after serving in Democratic Party positions, was elected to the United States House of Representatives in a special election in 1987. Facing little opposition in subsequent re-election efforts, she has served in the House ever since. She filed papers to run for the House again in the 2026 election just two weeks after the November 2024 elections. Mrs Pelosi just turned 85 years old.

So, it is with some amusement that I saw that the Speaker Emerita, as she refers to herself, had herself filmed ripping up a paper crown in Saturday’s “No Kings” silliness. Video below the fold. Continue reading →

I check Bluesky so you don’t have to!

Will Bunch, the “national opinion columnist” for The Philadelphia Inquirer, is as thoroughly eaten up with #TrumpDerangementSyndrome as anyone on earth, and his rant this morning on Bluesky — he’s mostly abandoned Twitter — is thoroughly amusing. Mr Bunch is bemoaning “the media’s anemic (or non-) coverage of the massive No Kings movement,” which led me to check his own newspaper’s website. As of 8:11 AM EDT this morning, there were no stories showing up on the website that mentioned or even hinted as coverage of the #NoKings protests.

Even the Inquirer’s Editorial Board had to give President Trump (grudging) credit for the ceasefire and return of the hostages, so perhaps, just perhaps, the No Kings protests, scheduled for this coming Saturday, are not proving to be particularly well-timed. That he’s scheduled to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday to discuss ways to end the 3½-years-long Russo-Ukrainian War means that, despite his earlier failure to get an agreement there — something the left widely mocked — President Trump is still trying to work on a peace agreement there as well.

Can you imagine the apoplexy on the left if he did manage to get such an agreement? Imagine that: the “literally Hitler” demon to the left forging agreements to end two major wars?  🙂

Of course, the No Kings protests last summer were mostly a dud, despite the hype the left gave them, but at least they mostly avoided turning into riots. Perhaps that’s what the organizers think they need to become, to get much attention. William Teach noted that the global warming climate change protesters who have moved beyond peaceable assembly into destroying art and gluing themselves to the road to block traffic are now facing real punishment, so there’s that issue.

The hostages have been released, but some on the left are just very upset that Hamas have been defeated

At 10:40 PM EDT on Sunday, October 12, 2025 — the real Columbus Day! — a distinguished gentleman calling himself simply “matt” quoted a tweet by Ivanka Trump Kushner, showing her praying at the Western Wall, responding “girl fuck you and your pedophile dad AND israel”. Please pardon the language, but I’m not going to soft-peddle it. Matt’s Twitter — I refuse to call it 𝕏 — biography self-describes him as “queer jew w very long nails, host of a bit fruity, he/they”, so make of that what you will.

President Trump and Mrs Kushner’s husband, Jared Kushner, were part of the negotiation which got the first phase of the Trump Peace Plan accepted by both Israel and whatever passes for the leadership of Hamas, and the remaining living hostages held by Hamas are being released. Israel has accepted the ceasefire provisions, and the killing has stopped. What, I have to ask, does Matt want, for the IDF to keep blasting and bombing Gaza, to keep killing more ‘Palestinians’?

Then there was Antony Blinken, who was Secretary of State under President Biden, who tweeted:

It starts with a clear and comprehensive post conflict plan for Gaza. It’s good that President Trump adopted and built on the plan the Biden Administration developed after months of discussion with Arab partners, Israel and the Palestinian Authority. It centers on temporary, transitional authorities for Gaza’s governance, security, humanitarian assistance, and rebuilding, led by Arab and international partners alongside Palestinians, backed by the United States, and ultimately handed over to full Palestinian control.

That was part of a twelve-tweet series praising the Trump Peace Plan, trying to take some credit for what President Trump and his people accomplished, what Messrs Biden and Blinken and their staffers failed to accomplish. The war in Gaza went on for 15 months and 13 days while they were in office, and only 8 months and 23 days after Mr Trump took office.

Mr Blinken admitted one reason that President Trump was able to achieve what Messrs Biden and Blinken could not:

First, what changed to make this breakthrough possible? Hamas is finally and fully isolated. Arab states and Turkey have said “enough.” The misery Hamas provoked and would allow to persist has delegitimized it among most Gazans. And Hamas realized that the cavalry (Iran, Hezbollah, the Houthis) are not coming to the rescue.

Let’s tell the real truth: Mr Trump told Hamas, explicitly, that if they didn’t agree to the plan, Israel would have complete American support to not only continue the war, but to intensify it and totally obliterate Gaza. President Biden never went that far, and limited American assistance to Israel, which is at least part of the reason Hamas continued what was essentially a hopeless fight.

Then there was this:

Israel has long since achieved its war aims — destroying Hamas as an organized military force so October 7 can never be repeated and eliminating those responsible for its horrors – but at terrible cost to Palestinian civilians caught in a crossfire they did not start and were powerless to stop. Only the hostages remained. Israelis want them home and the war to end, putting pressure on the Israeli government to take the deal, not move the goalposts.

“Palestinian civilians caught in a crossfire they did not start”? Bovine feces! While it were Hamas and their allies who launched the October 7th attack, the people of Gaza wildly cheered it on when they knew it has happened, when the Hamas savages dragged the kidnapped hostages through the streets, celebrating the attack, celebrating the killings, and protecting Hamas.

Jeremy Corbyn, the far-left British politician, tweeted:

It is not up to Blair, Trump or Netanyahu to decide the future of Gaza. That is up to the people of Palestine.

Has he forgotten that the Allies of World War II occupied defeated Germany, denazified it, and set Germany on the path to becoming a peaceful Western democracy, rather than the threat to peace in Europe it had been? Has he forgotten that the United States occupied Japan, transforming its government and writing its constitution, to transform Japan from a militaristic conquering state to a peaceful one? Some cultures cannot be trusted, and the culture of the ‘Palestinians’ after twenty years free of Israeli occupation is one of them.

It goes way beyond those two: my Twitter feed is full of the irredentists of big, big words but who didn’t have the balls to go to Gaza to fight for the ‘Palestinians.’

I am concerned that not enough will be done to pacify Gaza, to end the reign of the irredentists, but only time will answer that.

Enforcing our immigration laws works!

We reported, on June 19th, that the decrease in the estimated illegal immigrant population was far greater than the number who had been deported, meaning that the greater part of the decrease was among those who ‘self-deported,’ those who realized that the welcome mat had been pulled, and chose to return to their homelands by themselves rather than being picked up and shoved out the door. Now, the number is even greater!

President Trump and Secretary Noem’s Robust Immigration Law Enforcement Yields Real Results for Americans

WASHINGTON – On Tuesday, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that 2 million illegal aliens have been removed or have self-deported since January 20.

The Trump administration is on pace to shatter historic records and deport nearly 600,000 illegal aliens by the end of President Donald Trump’s first year since returning to office. Two million illegal aliens have left the United States in less than 250 days, including an estimated 1.6 million who have voluntarily self-deported and more than 400,000 deportations.

Just the threat of being picked up and deported has caused somewhere around 1.6 million illegals to head back home; the threat of our immigration laws actually being enforced has worked. This is for what 77,302,580 Americans voted!

“The numbers don’t lie: 2 million illegal aliens have been removed or self-deported in just 250 days— proving that President Trump’s policies and Secretary Noem’s leadership are working and making American communities safe,” said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. “Ramped-up immigration enforcement targeting the worst of the worst is removing more and more criminal illegal aliens off our streets every day and is sending a clear message to anyone else in this country illegally: Self-deport or we will arrest and deport you.”

Let’s tell the truth here: if by the “worst of the worst” the Department means the illegals with other criminal arrests and convictions, that’s not quite right: a lot of illegals who don’t have criminal records have been picked up and shipped out as well. But the story of Des Moines, Iowa, school superintendent Ian Roberts provides us with a window into how even the (supposedly) nicest of the illegals have had to circumvent our laws and fabricate their backgrounds to make it economically in the US. They loved him in Des Moines, and thought that he was doing a good job — at $300,000 a year that could have gone to an actual American citizen — but he was a bad guy:

  • 1996 charges in New York of forgery and drug possession with intent to deliver.
  • A 1998 charge of unauthorized use of a vehicle in New York City, which was later dismissed.
  • A 2012 conviction for reckless driving, unsafe operation and speeding in Maryland.
  • 2020 charges in New York of criminal possession of a loaded weapon outside a home or business. The list notes one of those charges, for second-degree criminal possession, was “inchoate,” a legal term meaning the crime has been committed when the individual takes a “substantial step” even if the person ultimately fails to complete the crime.
  • A previously reported 2022 Pennsylvania conviction for unlawful possession of a loaded firearm.

The Des Moines Register also noted that some of the criminal records against him had been sealed.

He also falsified his academic credentials in applying for the Des Moines job. Living and working illegally in the United States is something which has to be built on a web of lies. I wonder how many of those who have ‘self-deported’ realized the network of lies that had been forced to use would quickly fall apart if anyone looked.

The apparently entitled Mr Roberts thought that our laws simply didn’t apply to him, as he ignored a June 2024 deportation order. How many other illegals have similar records of law-breaking and evasion? We don’t know, but the probabilities that Mr Roberts is the only one of the illegals who have done things like this are vanishingly small.

School district leaders in Des Moines drew up a detailed wish list when they set out to hire a new superintendent in 2023. They wanted someone who could increase reading scores, improve the math skills of Black boys, adhere to an affirmative action plan and much more.

Most of all, Des Moines Public Schools needed a galvanizing leader who could meet a moment shaped by the aftermath of Covid and the racial justice movement of 2020.

Translation: the Des Moines school board wanted someone who is black for the job. Des Moines city is only 11.7% black, more than twice the state’s 5.2% black population. Judging solely by his résumé, Mr Roberts certainly filled the desired qualifications, or at least would have had his résumé not been partially falsified.

Ian Roberts’s application seemed almost too perfect.

Dr. Roberts had spent most of his career in urban school systems, building a reputation as a charismatic, hands-on administrator. He wrote books, gave speeches and boasted of degrees from brand-name universities. His life story was also compelling: an immigrant from Guyana who competed in the Olympics and spoke bluntly about his experiences as a Black man in the United States.

“I believe deeply in the promise of public education being the most important opportunity gap closer for youth, particularly with a focus on diverse populations,” Dr. Roberts, who is in his 50s, wrote in his cover letter for the Des Moines job.

“Dr Roberts”? The Times noted that Mr Roberts initially claimed a doctorate in education from Morgan State University, but though the school says he attended there, there is no record of him actually earning his doctorate. He now claims a doctorate in education from Trident University International, a non-resident school which Wikipedia is circumspect enough to not call a diploma mill, but the school’s Wikipedia description certainly sounds like just that. The First Street Journal, in line with very few other publications, does use honorifics, but we decline to refer to Mr Roberts as Dr Roberts; we will not honor such a sketchy school.

Back to the Department of Homeland Security:

DHS has made it clear: the era of open borders is over. For four straight months, United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has released zero illegal aliens into the country.

A recent study from the United Nations reported that President Trump’s immigration policies led to a 97% reduction in illegal aliens heading northbound to the U.S. from Central America. That same study found that 49% of would-be illegal aliens who decided to stop their journey towards the U.S. did so because they thought it would be impossible to enter the U.S. under President Trump. Likewise, 46% said fears of detention or deportation led to abandoning their attempt to illegally enter the U.S.

It’s simple: no one is going to make the costly and difficult trek from Guatemala and Honduras and Mexico if they believe that they won’t be able to cross into the United States. When President Biden reversed President Trump’s first term policies, policies which had greatly reduced, though not completely eliminated, the flow of illegals across our southern border, he effectively opened the floodgates, and perhaps ten million or more people entered illegally under Mr Biden’s policies; only the Lord knows the actual number.

Illegal immigration was Donald Trump’s primary issue in 2016, and again in 2024. If President Biden had retained just his predecessor’s immigration policies, it’s fair to ask the Democrats whether Mr Trump would be President today.

We can and should discuss reasonable immigration reform . . . after we have deported all of those currently here illegally. But right now, no matter how good and kind and noble they seem — Mr Roberts certainly filled that bill! — they are constant liars and criminals, because that is what is required for an illegal immigrant to live in the United States.

Hamas have not yet accepted the Trump Peace Plan they supposedly had “no choice” but to accept.

Hamas keep dithering, unsurprisingly, on the Trump Peace Plan, and Gazan ‘civilians’ keep being sent to Jahannam because of it. But perhaps, just perhaps, the people of Gaza are finally getting fed up with their terrorist masters. From The New York Times:

Interviews in Gaza suggest wide support for a proposal that calls for an immediate end to a war that has brought immense civilian suffering.

Tel Aviv — Palestinians in Gaza have spent almost two years longing for an end to the war that has destroyed their communities and killed tens of thousands of their neighbors. Many say their best hope yet is the latest cease-fire plan proposed by the United States — if only Hamas would accept it.

“Hamas must say yes to this offer — we have been through hell already,” said Mahmoud Bolbol, 43, a construction worker who has remained in Gaza City with his six children in the battered shell of their home throughout the war.

President Trump unveiled the proposal while meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel at the White House on Monday. Mr. Trump said that if Hamas did not accept its terms, then he would give Israel the green light to “finish the job” of destroying the armed group.

Hamas has not yet given its response to the proposal, but interviews with Palestinians in Gaza on Wednesday suggested widespread public support for the plan. It calls for an immediate end to a war that has brought immense civilian suffering.

Hamas, of course, don’t care about “immense civilian suffering,” but the well-being of their own leadership, a leadership which lead not from Gaza, but Doha, Qatar. We reported, on Monday, how the Qatari government (reportedly) told the Trump Administration that they could convince Hamas to disarm and accept the plan, and French President Emmanuel Macron stated on Twitter — I refuse to call it 𝕏, the worst rebranding in history — that Hamas have “no choice but to immediately release all hostages and follow this path.”

Yet, it seems that Hamas believe they have a choice, and, at least at publication time, have not accepted the plan. It took two atomic bombs, and that after half a year of relentless explosive and firebombing, to get Emperor Hirohito to force the militarist government to surrender. There’s no particular reason to think Hamas are any less pigheaded.

For the past two days, Mr. Bolbol said, his neighbors have talked about almost nothing but the cease-fire proposal. If Hamas rejects it, he said, his family would finally leave Gaza City and head for what he hoped would be the relative safety of the enclave’s south.

“Hamas needs to understand: Enough is enough,” Mr. Bolbol said. Most Gazans are not members of the group, he added, “so why drag us into this?”

We do not know how Mr Bolbol reacted personally to the October 7th attack, but we do know that most of the denizens of Gaza erupted in a cheering frenzy as hostages, both living and dead, were paraded back in Gaza, tied up, thrown in the back of the ubiquitous white Toyota trucks, celebrating an attack that anyone with an IQ above room temperature — room temperature in Celsius! — should have known would lead to a strong lethal and destructive response from Israel.

Some, including some from Hamas, have said that they didn’t think that Israel would have destroyed Gaza to the extent that they have. In the mindset of the ‘Palestinians,’ I suppose that they accepted that there’d be some martyrdom, but perhaps not this much martyrdom.

But the proposal contains several elements that Hamas has said are unacceptable.

Those include a ban on the group exercising future power in Gaza, a requirement that it disarm and the establishment of a transitional government overseen by foreign officials, including Mr. Trump and Tony Blair, the former British prime minister.

The proposal unveiled on Monday sent a rare flash of hope through Gaza, people said in interviews. But others are less hopeful.

Some people said the terms of the proposal made them doubt that Hamas would agree. Others said their doubts grew from something more basic and bitter: They simply did not believe that Hamas would put the interests of the Palestinian people above the interests of the organization.

Well, who can know? Perhaps Hamas leaders and fighters really believe that their interests and those of the ‘Palestinian’ people in general are the same, but attempting to read the minds of people who are in no way part of Western civilization by those of us who are civilized is often an exercise in futility. In the “mirror universe” episode of Star Trek, Mr Spock told Captain Kirk, once they were returned to their regular dimensions, that it was easier for them, as civilized men, to play the part of barbarians than it was for their opposites, as barbarians, to play the roles of civilized men.

So, we have the specter of civilized Westerners trying to bring aid and comfort to the people of Gaza, something the Israeli Navy has now stopped, all to aid people who have nothing in common with Western civilization, and who would happily assault or even kill many of the “Global Sumud Flotilla” if they actually lived in Gaza, or anyplace else in the world where Islamic fundamentalism has taken hold.

Perhaps Hamas will, in the end, accept or negotiate an amendment to the Trump plan, but one thing is certain: if Hamas do accept disarmament, it will only be until they can covertly — and perhaps not so covertly — rearm.

Sources told the Post that Qatar was “capable of persuading Hamas to agree to a deal that includes demilitarization.”

Qatar informed the US President Donald Trump’s administration that it would be able to persuade Hamas to disarm and accept Trump’s 20-point peace plan for Gaza, Sky News Arabia reported on Monday.

But let’s tell the truth here: Hamas will never seriously agree to disarm. There is a slight possibility that they’ll agree in public, but continue to hide weapons, and seek to covertly rearm as soon as possible, but they’ll never agree to actually disarm.

Now, love Trump or hate him, when he sees a problem he doesn’t put together committees, he doesn’t yammer about working on fixing it, he just works to fix it.

Trump administration presented Gaza peace plan to Arab leaders

The Trump administration proposed a 21-point peace plan to end the war in Gaza to Arab leaders on Tuesday, which led to an exchange of ideas among the leaders over how to agree on a final proposal that could potentially drive an end the conflict, according to a senior administration official and regional sources familiar with the matter.

On Wednesday US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff expressed confidence that there would be “some sort of breakthrough” in the coming day but did not go into details.

“We had a very productive session,” Witkoff said of the meeting between President Donald Trump and the US delegation and the Arab leaders.

“We presented what we call the Trump 21-point plan for peace in the Mideast, in Gaza,” Witkoff said at the Concordia summit in New York.

“I think it addresses Israeli concerns, as well as the concerns of all the neighbors in the region,” Witkoff added. “And we’re hopeful, and I might say even confident, that in the coming days, we’ll be able to announce some sort of breakthrough.”

The plan that the US proposed included a number of points that the administration has made publicly, including the release of all hostages and a permanent ceasefire, according to a separate source briefed on the matter. It also outlined a framework for how Gaza can be governed without Hamas and included a proposal for Israel gradually withdrawing from the Gaza strip, the source said.
