I can at least understand people who want to help illegal immigrants who have not broken any non-immigration-related laws, but who on God’s earth would want to protect the criminals? Well, apparently the Democrats do! From the New York Post, with a hat tip to William Teach:
NYC’s sanctuary DAs ordered prosecutors to downgrade charges to keep illegal immigrants in US, House GOP report finds

WASHINGTON — New York City’s elected Democratic district attorneys are bending over backwards to keep illegal immigrants in the US, instructing prosecutors to downgrade charges to those considered “a non-deportable offense,” according to a stunning House Judiciary Committee report shared with The Post.
The GOP-led panel found that Bronx DA Darcel Clark trains her subordinates “to conceal facts from the record of conviction” and “pursue alternative charges” that would keep non-citizens free to roam in America.
Not even cases involving child sex crimes are off-limits — with Clark’s office asking assistant DAs in a 2019 guide to “immigration-conscious plea bargaining” to “[o]ffer something that does not have the child’s age as an element of the crime.”
How is this not deliberately endangering the welfare of other children in the future? Reduce the charges, offender eventually gets out, and does so more quickly than if full charges had been sought, and then rapes another child?
This was from a 2019 policy guide, meaning that it dates from President Trump’s first term.
Meanwhile, in Queens, DA Melinda Katz has told her prosecutors to “exercise extreme caution” and “not get caught up in the label of [f]elonies, [m]isdemeanors” for illegal aliens, according to the report published five months after the committee sent requests for information on the Big Apple’s so-called “sanctuary” policies to prosecutor’s offices in all five boroughs, as well as the NYPD and Department of Correction.
Those policies have had deadly consequences, as in the case of a 92-year-old Queens woman who was murdered by a Guyanese migrant, Reeaz Khan, after a federal detainer was lodged against him in 2020.
One wonders if Philadelphia’s George Soros-sponsored, criminal loving and police-hating District Attorney, Larry Krasner, has a similar policy in place? Then again, Mr Krasner likes to let all criminals off leniently, regardless of their immigration status.
Mr Katz wound up with a 22-year to life sentence for the murder, but not until after he was freed and then committed another wholly preventable killing.
In some cases, prosecutors in Brooklyn DA Eric Gonzalez’s office are instructed to offer “a plea for a lesser offense in light of the disproportionate immigration consequences a higher level offense may result in.”
Translation: Mr Gonzalez is more concerned about keeping immigrants, possibly illegal immigrants, in the United States, in New York City, than he is with the safety of the law-abiding people of NYC.
In a report authored by Katz’s office last year, the Queens DA was confirmed to employ an “immigration specialist,” whose sole purpose is helping assistant DAs “navigate through plea options and assist in framing dispositions that will prevent unwanted immigration consequences.”
In 2020 alone, the “immigration specialist” helped get 21 convictions reduced or thrown out entirely. In six cases, Katz urged then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo to grant a pardon to prevent deportation.
It’s not just New York City: we previously noted how Governor Tim Walz (D-MN), the 2024 Democratic vice presidential nominee, and his minions orchestrated a pardon for a convicted child rapist to try to keep him from being deported. Fortunately, despite the pardon, he was sent back to Laos anyway.
The New York Times reported in that case that:
(Tou Lue) Vang was around 18 when he first began abusing the girl, who was then 10 years old. Mr. Vang initially tried to defend his actions upon his arrest in 2005.
When a detective interviewed Mr. Vang, he acknowledged having had sexual contact with the girl and called it a “minor thing,” according to a criminal complaint. Mr. Vang blamed cultural norms in Thailand, according to the complaint.
This is what we mentioned on Monday: many of these illegal immigrants are coming from countries and cultures in which getting away with crimes is the norm, and they have few inhibitions when it comes to doing stupid, vile, and disgusting things which shock the conscience of those of us reared in Western civilization.
The duty of the district attorney, or whatever the local prosecutor is called, is to both punish criminals and protect the citizens of his jurisdiction from becoming the victims of crime. Our ‘progressive’ prosecutors seem to be doing the exact opposite.
